Attention!

Important Note on the Instruction Sheet for Trumpeter 1/35 Karl
(2 February 2007)

Trumpeter has released three 1/35 Karl kits so far: #208, #209 Karl with railway transport, and #215 Karl without railway transport. Their instruction sheets all let you choose either "Firing mode" or "Travelling mode" for Karl. For the Firing mode, you are to make the model with "lowered (and enabled) suspension arms" and "unfolded side decks". For the Traveling mode, you will have "raised (and disabled) suspension arms" and "folded side decks".

In this site, the following terms are used for four distinct state of Karl.

  • (A) Automotive mode: Karl is running on its own.
  • (B) Operation mode: loading, aiming, and firing state.
  • (C) Railway transport mode: Karl is loaded onto the special railway transporter
  • (D) Road transport mode: Karl is disassembled and loaded onto Culemeyer trailers for road transport.
These modes and set-up of various features in these modes are described in Table 1 in "Operating Modes of Karl and Kits" page

The "Firing mode" and the "Travelling mode" in Trumpeter's instruction sheet respectively correspond to "(A) Automotive mode" and "(C) Railway transport mode" in this site. Notice that the "Firing mode" in the instruction sheet does NOT make the correct "firing" state of Karl. The instruction sheet has no indication as to how to recreate correct "(B) Operation mode", which is most attractive and appropriate shape to be displayed with Munitionpanzer IVs in dioramas. In order to model "(B) Operation mode", you should "raise the suspension arms" and "unfold the side decks".
