Accessories and Update Sets: Barrels

  • ARMO: 1/35 Barrel
    35768 60cm Morser Karl
    (Released in May 2003)

A set of a tuned aluminum barrel and an outer tube. The barrel is partly rifled near the end. The barrel of this size weighs very heavy! While this product is intended for Dragon's 1/35 kits (6179, 6179X), it might be used, with some modification, for Trumpeter's kits as well.

The difference between Dragon's 60cm-gun Karl and 54cm-gun Karl kits is primarily the gun barrel only, this product may be used for building a 60cm-gun Karl model out of the 54cm-gun Karl kit (well, it doesn't make much sense though).

The sample I obtained has some minor chips inside.

    35768 60cm Morser Karl

The profile of the barrel closely matches that of the injection plastic barrel in Dragon's kit. The outer barrel has slightly different profile than Dragon's kit. I cannot determine which is better or more accurate.

This barrel has only about 60 rifling lines, whereas the real barrel has 112 rifling lines. If we are to give 122 rifling lines to this barrel, the pitch between adjacent rifling lines should be about 0.48mm. I guess it is not impossible to machine rifling lines at this pitch, with today's technology. Considering costs and effect, it may not be worth the effort. So, I wouldn't fuss too much about it.

    35771 54cm Morser "Loki" Gerat 041
    (Released in August 2003)

A set of a tuned aluminum barrel and an outer tube, just like the set for the 60cm gun. The barrel is rifled near the end. While this product is intended for Dragon's 54cm-gun kit (6181, 9129), it may be used for building a 54cm-gun Karl model out of the 60cm-gun Karl kits (6179, 6179X) (well, it doesn't make much sense though).

This barrel has only about 50 rifling lines, whereas the real thing has 96 rifling lines. If we are to give 96 rifling lines to this barrel, the pitch between adjacent rifling lines should be about 0.5mm.

    35788 Karl-Gerat 040 (initial version) gun barrel
    35787 Karl-Gerat 041 (initial version) gun barrel
    (Released in January 2005)

These barrels are for Trumpeter's three 1/35 kits. When compared with the barrels for Dragon's kits, the main difference is the lack of the outer tube in these sets. The profile and shape of these sets are also slightly different so that these barrels can smoothly mate with Trumpeter's parts.

Note that although the boxes says these are for "initial version" kits, they are not only for the kit "00208 Moeser Karl-Geraet 040/041 (Initial Version) on railway transport carrier", but can also be used with the kit "00209 Moerser Karl-Geraet 040/041 on railway transport carrier" and "00215 Moeser Karl-Geraet 040/041".

    TG-70 60cm Morser Karl
    (Dragon - Trumpeter)
    TG-70 60cm Morser Karl (Dragon - Trumpeter)
    (Released in June 2005)

The barrel and the sleeve are turned as a single piece. As is with other metal barrles from Jordi Rubio, this is not meant for a particular manufacturer's kit; it can be used for both Dragon and Trumpeter kits. Whichever kit you use this barrel for, you need to slightly modify the kit parts to accept the barrel.

It has rifling threads. The number of threads looks greater than, and their length is longer than the threads in ARMO's barrel. However, they are cut as straight grooves, rather than spiral ones in real guns. I shouldn't complain about this, as I have not seen any turned model gun barrels which has spiral threads.

    • In order to fit to Dragon's kit...
      1. Cut the barrel parts (B11, B12) at 49mm from the end.
      2. Attach the metal barrel to the front of the main gun block (D8, D11). The remaining plastic barrel parts should be attached from the back of the main gun block.
      3. The sleeve parts (B13, B16) are not used.

    • In order to fit to Trumpeter's kit...
      1. Cut the barrel parts (S1, S2) at 49mm from the end.
      2. Remove the base of the sleeve from the part R2 (see the photo right).
      3. Attach the metal barrel to the part R2. The remaining plastic barrel parts should be attached from the back of the main gun block.
      4. The sleeve parts (R9, R10) are not used.

In either kit, Rubio's metal barrel is joined to plastic barrel parts, care has to be taken to align them correctly. Some may concern that join may be visible when one looks inside the barrel. I would think it will be unnoticeble if we paint the inside the barrel black. I rather fear that the gun may lean forward because of the weight of the metal barrel, unless we add some counter weight in the breach block.

As the barrel and its sleeve are shaped as one piece, there is no way to enjoy the gimmick, in either Dragon or Trumpeter kits, to recoil the gun.

  • JP Hobby: Conversion Set for Dragon 1/35 Kits
    JP35A11 Moerser "Karl" - Geraet 041 54cm
    (Released in June 2003)

The set converts Dragon's 60 cm gun kits (6179, 6179X) into a 54 cm gun model. This is a VERY simple set consisting of just a 54 cm gun barrel only. No other parts are supplied. While casting is fine including rifling lines inside the barrel, the rifling lines are represented as convex lines!

As Dragon has released 54 cm gun kits (6181), there is little reason for this set to exist. Maybe you would want to use it for forthcoming Tristar's kit, if it comes only with a 60 cm gun...

  • One35th: 1/35 Barrel
The author of the "One35th Modeling" site, which has comprehensive and informative pages on the Karl moerser, has designed and produced his own version of the 60 cm gun barrel in 1/35 scale. While this is not a commercial product and it appears he does not intend wide distribution, he may sell you one if he still has some spare. Check this page for more details on this barrel.

This gun barrel does not have full length; it represents only the front half of the real barrel, and the barrel and the outer tube are turned as a single piece. There are no rifling lines inside the barrel. When compared with the plastic barrel in Dragon's kits and ARMO's turned barrel, its outer profile is slightly different from and is slightly ticker than the others. I cannot say which barrel is dimensionally more accurate; but this barrel gives massive impression.
